What do you think when you see a bee? Do you immediately cut and run, fearing the stinger and unsure of whether you’re dealing with a bumble or a wasp? If you’re anything like me, it evokes a sense of wonder as you watch a busy bumble bobble and bump amongst the blooms. Are they concerned that they look aimless and lackadaisical as they work? Are they embarrassed that their funny fuzzy bodies don’t seem aerodynamic at all? Certainly not, they buzz their busy little bee song and be the bee they are- doing their bee work at their bee pace.

I want to adopt that busy bee mindset. I’m often busy, but not being. Busy with the tasks, but somehow disconnected from the experiences. The years seem to whiz past briskly, as I am feeling stuck to the usual dragging order of the day. I’ve vaporized myself into the needs of others and the demands of life. I feel disjointed and disconnected. I want to bumble my way through days, stopping to smell the flowers that look perfect to me, regardless of- nay totally independent from- the thoughts or actions of those around me. Humbly-bumbly, I propose our most brilliant selves would present if we were busy being authentically ourselves.
I’m honestly not sure how to be authentically myself, after years of stuffing myself into the boxes other people and situations presented for me; I am walking into a new self-experience. I’ve made space for others and whittled my space to nothing. So much of my energy was spent hating my body exponentially for every extra ounce of space it filled, swallowing my true thoughts and opinions with an assuring smile for anyone who spoke to me, and choking back my words so long I all but lost my voice. Finally, I will take the advice I’ve given to others, I will apply my love and concern for others to myself, and I will be me. With a shaky voice, I will strengthen my grasp on just who I am and being that as fully as I can, until eventually my voice won’t shake, my heart won’t rattle in my chest when I speak my truth. I will live with integrity. I will BE.

Bees are powerful symbols. They are known for their tireless work ethic and their ability to contribute to the greater good of the hive. This has made them a symbol of industriousness, cooperation, and community. Taking another look at their work, bees play a crucial role in pollination, which is essential for the growth and reproduction of many plants.
